The hens are laying!

The green tinge is their actual color, not a lighting effect. These eggs must have come from one or both of the Auracana hens that we have. I have been peeking inside the henhouse every day or two to see if any hens had begun laying, but the last couple days had been a bit hectic. I am jealous that Tom found them first! It’s okay that they’ve been outside for a day or two–in many places outside the US, it is not common practice to refrigerate eggs, and they seem to keep just fine. We are debating whether to fry these first eggs, or make egg-nog! They are a little on the small side, but as the hens mature the eggs they lay will get bigger.

Isaac wore his pumpkin seed costume for trick-or-treating last night. We had already attended a couple parties over the weekend and it was somewhat worse for wear, but it hadn’t quite fallen apart yet.

Most people seemed to figure out what his costume was supposed to be pretty easily, although one person asked if he was a turtle. I guess he did look a bit like a turtle.  If he ever wants to be a turtle for Halloween we can just flip the costume around and paint a turtle shell on the new front, LOL.

We processed a Delaware and a Buff Orpington. Tom prepared the Delaware as classic fried chicken.

The meat was a little chewy in my opinion — I guess 3-month-old chickens are a bit long in the tooth by typical commercial poultry standards. There also wasn’t a whole lot of meat on the bones, even though this was one of our heaviest birds.

Tom prepared the Buff Orpington as chicken and dumplings — now this was incredibly tasty. So we are planning on cooking the rest as various slow-cooked dishes.

We still have a lot of crowing, unfortunately. We only slaughtered and plucked those two because it turned out to be incredibly painstaking and tedious work to remove all the feathers. Some friends had offered us the loan of a mechanical plucker, so we will process the other 6 roosters once we have that machine on hand.

The roosters, that is. Or at least, the talk of the neighborhood. My next-door neighbor came over last night to sit on the porch for a while and chat. She said she has run into several people recently, while walking around the neighborhood, who have asked her if she knows where the crowing is coming from. No one is apparently upset about it, just very curious. Although she said one person shared a concern that the roosters were being raised for fighting! She assured the person that the roosters are just being raised for dinner.

Several of the boys are over 5 pounds, or close to it, so their day of reckoning is coming. We are looking at probably “processing” 4 birds one weekend, and then waiting a few weeks to let the smaller roosters put on some more weight.

Monday’s note from preschool said that Isaac says he now wants to be superman for Halloween. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t really know what superman is, other than having heard other kids talk about it. We already bought some material for making the seed costume so we are going forward with that! In fact he further clarified at one point that he would like to be a pumpkin seed. So we have a light brown long-sleeved t-shirt which he can wear with khaki pants, and some khaki-colored cotton fabric, and some foam padding. The plan is to cut the foam into a seed like shape, shape the fabric around it, and make a kind of seed-shaped sleeveless garment which will go on top of the t-shirt like a vest. As well as a green hood to represent “sprouting” of the seed. And finally, to give a little more visual clue as to what he is supposed to be, I’m going to applique a picture of a packet of pumpkin seeds to the front of the seed vest. I bought a fabric remnant on eBay that has pictures of seed packets printed on it:

Isaac is saying the most interesting things lately. A couple days ago his note from preschool said that he enjoyed the books they read that day about Halloween. I asked him more about that, like what were the books about, and was he excited about being a spider this year, and so on. Then he said, “I want to be a seed.” I was a little perplexed, and tried to get him to elaborate, but he didn’t say any more about it. I rarely see his teacher as I don’t do the drop-offs or the pick-ups most days, but I sent a note in the next morning asking if he had any insight into this statement. I received this note back:

I think a seed would be a great Halloween costume! I asked Isaac about it and he said he wanted to be a “big, little seed.” On further questioning he said, “Yeah, I want to be a little seed and grow.” I think a seed is a very creative costume for him to think of, especially knowing what seeds represent to a kid, the first part of something that grows bigger.

And then there’s even a little detailed drawing with suggestions of how to make the costume. We think his teacher (a man, incidentally) is pretty cool!

The only downside to all of this is that we already have a costume, a cute spider costume I picked up for $2 second-hand. And Isaac really liked it, he ran around the house for hours pretending to be a spider. But now that he has come up with this seed idea on his own, I feel like I should nurture that. So we are going to figure out how to dress him up as a seed. Should be fun.

Our chickens are now huge! The Buff cockerels are crowing quite enthusiastically. I think we need to walk around the block and tell our neighbors it won’t last too much longer. Crowing isn’t particularly loud compared to a barking dog or a garbage truck. But it can be an odd sound in the urban backyard.

A few weeks ago we went to the Mountain State Fair and took some time to see the chickens on exhibit there. We wanted to see just what a blue ribbon bird was like. What an enlightening experience that was.

It was particularly helpful to see the adult version of our teenage chicks. Number one, some chickens are very big! Our “heavies”, the Delawares and Buffs still look puny compared the champion chickens at the fair.

And two, it turns out that the pair we thought were Araucanas are Buttercups, and vice versa. Until then, the only basis for comparison we had was photos linked from Henderson’s Chicken Chart.  Seeing them in person was a world of difference.  There was one little Buttercup hen there on display and I looked at her and everything became clear. There was also an Araucana pair, which confirmed the epiphany. Not only that, one of the Araucanas is a rooster!

The roosters are crowing at this point. We’ve been hearing some primitive crow-like calls in the mornings for a couple weeks. This morning I heard quite a few genuine, loud, multi-syllabic crows.

We weighed them again this weekend and all the boys are just over 3 pounds. I’d say they have at least a month before they’re anywhere near big enough to, um, process. The books say it’s not worth it until they’re at least 4.5 pounds. Honestly the Delawares should get up to at least 7 or 8 pounds but I think that’s a long way off.
Our nearest neighbors know we’re not planning to keep the roosters long-term but I am getting anxious about the crowing. I can hear it in the house as I type this.

I have had some other updates–weights and pictures and whatnot–but the last week and this one have been crazy busy so it will have to wait.

Our flock’s appetite is ever-more voracious. When she let them out of the henhouse early this morning, Deborah discovered that there was not a speck of ration left in the feeder from yesterday. So she filled it up. I checked on them again at around 10:00 a.m. and found it nearly empty again. I refilled the feeder and gave them a bunch of scratch feed plus some oats. Plus three soft tomatoes (we’ve got more tomatoes than we can handle from the garden, all the questionable ones are going to the chickens). Plus a few handfuls of clover.

I checked on them before dinner and again refilled the feeder and threw ‘em some scratch.

I like feeding them a variety of things. I think it is better for their health and better for the nutritional value they will create. Many of the chicken books we have address feed as being mainly the dry ration from the feed store, with some kitchen scraps thrown in. But the birds really seem ravenous for the fresh greens and other vegetables they get every day. I think that with a variety of foods available, they will choose the nutrients they need the most.
The chickens are growing fast, and their food consumption along with. A few weeks more and perhaps we’ll have a few fat enough for the skillet. Then it will be our turn to pig out.
